Enrique Barrera is a Professor of Materials Science and NanoEngineering at Rice University. He holds leadership roles in initiatives like the NSF AGEP program, focusing on advancing underrepresented students to the professoriate. His research emphasizes nanomaterials, composites, and nanotechnology applications in drug delivery and biomedical engineering. He has pioneered the 'Materials Magic Show' K-12 outreach program and serves as CTO of NanoRidge Materials, Inc., a nanomaterials manufacturing firm.
Education: PhD (1987), M.S. (1984), and B.S. (1979) in Materials Science from the University of Texas. His teaching focuses on Materials Science, Mechanical Properties, and Nanocomposites. He has over 100 publications, seven patents, and is a member of ASM International and TMS.
Key research areas include interface studies of composites, carbon nanotube systems, and hybrid nanomaterials. His work bridges fundamental material science with practical applications like advanced coatings and biomedical scaffolds. Recent publications highlight innovations in stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems and nanotube-reinforced polymers.
Scientific awards include the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Mentoring (2002) and the National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award (1993). He actively promotes diversity in STEM through mentoring and recruitment initiatives.
