Enrico Baruffini serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical, Life and Environmental Sustainability Sciences at the University of Parma, where he teaches Genetics and Human Molecular Genetics across Bachelor's and Master's programs in Biology and Biomolecular Sciences. His office is located in the Biosciences Building (Room 13.02.1.012) at the Science Park Area.
His research focuses on mitochondrial genetics using Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model organism to investigate human pathologies including POLG-related disorders, OPA1 mutations, DNM1L variants, and tRNA modification defects. Key methodologies involve yeast functional complementation assays, drug repurposing screens, and molecular characterization of pathogenic variants.
Recent publications reveal strong emphasis on mitochondrial DNA replication fidelity, oxidative damage repair mechanisms, and therapeutic strategies for mitochondrial encephalomyopathies. His collaborative work spans international consortia examining rare genetic disorders with multisystem manifestations.
Baruffini maintains active advising responsibilities as tutor for Biology undergraduate cohorts (2020-2026) and serves as reference professor for multiple degree programs. His lab employs trans-species approaches combining yeast, zebrafish, and patient-derived models for drug discovery.
