Dr. Eng Chua is an Adjunct Research Fellow in the School of Biomedical Sciences and a Senior Project Officer in the School of Indigenous Studies at The University of Western Australia. He holds a PhD in Microbiology (2011) from UWA, specializing in autotransporter proteins in Shigella flexneri. His research focuses on molecular microbiology, particularly Helicobacter pylori pathogenesis, antibiotic resistance mechanisms, and bioinformatic analysis of genomic and metagenomic datasets.
- Education: PhD in Microbiology, UWA (2011)
Research interests include bacterial pathogenesis, microbiome interactions, and the role of biofilms in antibiotic resistance. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and innovation.
Recent studies explore risk factors for H. pylori infections in China, bacterial interactions in the nasopharynx, and microbiome dynamics in livestock and human diseases. He collaborates with global teams, including Nobel laureate Barry Marshall, and has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals.
Eng has created datasets on bacterial communities in helminth-resistant sheep and genomic analyses of parasitic organisms. His research bridges molecular microbiology with clinical applications in infectious diseases.
