Emmeline Besamusca is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Languages, Literature and Communication at Utrecht University, specializing in Dutch Modern Literature. Her academic work focuses on Dutch culture and national identity from intercultural and international perspectives, with particular interest in representations of 'the Other' within Dutch contexts.
Dr. Besamusca teaches across multiple programs including the MA Dutch Studies, MA Intercultural Communication, University College Utrecht, and the BA minor Intercultural Communication. She maintains significant international connections, lecturing at the University of Vienna in the Department of Comparative Literature of the Institute Europäische und Vergleichende Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaft, and regularly teaching at Dutch departments in Central European institutions including Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest and Masaryk University in Brno.
Her research spans Dutch cultural studies, intercultural communication, and representations of national identity, with recent publications examining media representations of Poland in Dutch press, diversity in education, and Dutch society within global contexts. Between 2017-2020, she was a partner in Utrecht's USO project 'Building Blocks for Diversity.'
Her academic output shows consistent engagement with Dutch identity formation, intercultural perspectives, and representations of 'the Other' across media, literature, and educational contexts, with a notable focus on Dutch society's position within Europe and the global landscape.
Dr. Besamusca has edited and contributed to multiple volumes including the comprehensive 'Discovering the Dutch: On Culture and Society of the Netherlands' (2010, 2014, 2024 editions), demonstrating her sustained commitment to analyzing Dutch culture for international audiences.
