Dr. Janna Besamusca is an Assistant Professor in Interdisciplinary Social Science at Utrecht University, specializing in labor sociology and gender equality. She holds a PhD from the University of Amsterdam (2019) focusing on mothers' labor market positions globally. Her research investigates work-family policies, wage inequality, collective bargaining, and the impact of the pandemic on labor dynamics. She leads the EU-funded BARWAGE project analyzing wage-setting mechanisms across Europe and co-leads the COGIS_NL team studying pandemic-era work-family challenges.
Research Interests: Besamusca's work centers on labor market structures, including minimum wage policies, collective bargaining systems, and gender disparities in work arrangements. She examines low-wage sectors, self-employment among mothers, and the role of industrial relations in shaping equitable labor outcomes. Her interdisciplinary approach combines quantitative analysis with qualitative case studies.
Teaching: She coordinates the BA course 'Challenges in Work, Health and Wellbeing' and teaches the MA course 'Social Risks in Europe'. She supervises bachelor and master's theses in social policy and public health.
Projects: BARWAGE (2022-2024) evaluates collective bargaining's role in wage-setting across EU countries using data from 900 collective agreements. COGIS_NL tracks Dutch parental work-family balancing during the pandemic through surveys and policy analysis.
Labs/Teams: Active in Utrecht University's Institutions for Open Societies (IOS) research group, focusing on Future of Work and Gender Justice themes. She collaborates with international partners like ETUI and the Dutch AWVN labor federation.
