Emmanuel Stratakis

Dr. Emmanuel Stratakis is a Research Director and Acting Director of the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL) at the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH). He holds an adjunct professorship in the Physics Department at the University of Crete. His research focuses on ultrafast laser processing, biomimetic surface engineering, nanotechnology, and energy storage systems. Notably, he leads the Ultrafast Laser Micro- and Nano-Processing laboratory and has pioneered advancements in laser-induced periodic surface structures and bio-inspired materials.

Dr. Stratakis earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Crete in 2001. He has held visiting research positions at institutions such as the University of California, Berkeley, and CNRS (France). He has coordinated over 25 European and 19 national research projects, including FET grants, and has been recognized with awards like the OPTICA Fellow distinction and inclusion in the Top 2% Global Scientists list.

His work integrates interdisciplinary approaches, spanning photonics, materials science, and biomedical engineering. He directs FORTH’s Nanoscience Facility and serves as an EU expert in nanotechnologies and advanced manufacturing. Stratakis also founded Biomimetic, a company commercializing laser nanostructuring for functional surfaces. His research emphasizes applications in renewable energy, biomedicine, and sustainable materials.
