Emmanuel Droit is Associate Professor of Modern and Contemporary European History at the University of Rennes 2, specializing in transnational and comparative approaches to European history since 1789. He maintains a dual affiliation as an Associated Researcher at the Centre Marc Bloch in Berlin, where he previously served as Deputy Director. His academic career spans French and German institutions, reflecting his expertise in Franco-German historical relations.
Dr. Droit's research interests focus on Modern and Contemporary European History from comparative, transnational and entangled perspectives. His work examines the History of Socialism in a Global Context (19th-20th Centuries), Europe's cultures of remembrance in the 20th century, tangible and intangible cultural heritage, and the history of Germany, France and Poland since the Early Modern Period. Methodologically, he employs socio-cultural history of politics (socio-histoire), comparative history, transfer analysis, and experience history.
His publication record demonstrates consistent scholarly output across multiple languages, with recent works exploring Cold War frameworks beyond binary logic, transnational security apparatuses of the Eastern Bloc, and Franco-German-African historical transfers. The thematic trajectory shows increasing attention to transnational frameworks while maintaining deep expertise in GDR history and educational systems.
