Dr Emma Thomson is a Lecturer at the School of Biosciences, University of Sheffield, and leads the Thomson Lab within the Sheffield Institute for Nucleic Acids (SInFoNiA). She holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh (2003-2006) and has held post-doctoral positions at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Cell Biology (2006-2009) and the Biochemistry Centre (BZH) at the University of Heidelberg (2009-2016). Her research focuses on molecular mechanisms of ribosome biogenesis and RNA processing in eukaryotes, with a particular emphasis on ribosomal subunit assembly and nuclear export.
Education:
- PhD in Molecular Biology, University of Edinburgh (2003-2006)
- Post-doctoral Research at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Cell Biology (2006-2009)
- Post-doctoral Research at the University of Heidelberg (2009-2016)
Research Interests: Dr Thomson investigates how ribosomal subunits are assembled and transported within cells, with applications to understanding cellular stress responses and disease mechanisms. Her work combines structural biology, biochemistry, and advanced microscopy techniques to dissect the molecular pathways governing ribosome maturation.
Advising & Funding:
- Currently supervises a fully-funded PhD studentship in ribosome biogenesis (open to home/EU candidates).
- Accepts applications for post-doctoral researchers and graduate students interested in her lab’s focus areas.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Thomson Lab at SInFoNiA, a multidisciplinary team dedicated to nucleic acid research. Collaborates extensively with international groups in structural and cellular biology.
