Emma Sweeney

Dr. Emma Sweeney is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Queensland's UQ Centre for Clinical Research within the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences. She holds a Bachelor of Applied Science, a Bachelor (Honours) of Applied Science, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Queensland University of Technology.

Her research focuses on antimicrobial resistance, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), molecular diagnostics, and clinical microbiology. Key projects include studying Mycoplasma genitalium resistance mechanisms, developing molecular assays for personalized STI treatment, and investigating Neisseria species infections in animal models.

Dr. Sweeney has contributed to over 48 publications, including work on Mycoplasma genitalium strain diversity, Treponema pallidum genotyping for syphilis management, and molecular diagnostics for cytomegalovirus resistance. Her articles highlight advancements in resistance-guided therapies, public health responses to STIs, and epidemiological insights into antimicrobial resistance trends.

She has secured grants for projects such as enhancing diagnosis of human herpesvirus-6 in children and optimizing molecular diagnostic pathways for cytomegalovirus in stem cell transplant patients. Dr. Sweeney is available for supervision, having mentored students on topics like gonorrhoea diagnostics and antimicrobial resistance in Papua New Guinea.
