Dr. Emma Nicholson is an Associate Professor in Earth Sciences at University College London (UCL), where she directs the MSc Geophysical Hazards program. Her research focuses on volcanic emissions, geochemical cycles, and geohazards, with a strong emphasis on integrating robotics and uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS/drones) to study inaccessible volcanic plumes. She leads interdisciplinary projects such as the ENDEAVOUR initiative, funded by National Geographic, exploring environmental impacts of South Sandwich Arc volcanoes.
Her work combines field-based measurements, remote sensing, and laboratory analyses to understand volcanic gas dynamics, magma degassing, and trace element emissions. Notable contributions include studies on the 2021 Cumbre Vieja eruption (La Palma) and the 2018 Kīlauea eruption, highlighting metal pollutant deposition and volcanic aerosol chemistry. Nicholson's research also addresses climate interactions and public health risks from volcanic activity.
- Research Groups: Volcanology, UCL Hazard Centre
- Key Projects: ENDEAVOUR (National Geographic Grant), ABOVE (Drone Gas Measurements)
- Media Engagement: Featured in National Geographic's Lake of Fire documentary and active on social media (@volcanic_emma).
Nicholson's awards include the National Geographic Explorer Grant (2020). She teaches courses on volcanoes, research methods, and geophysical hazards fieldwork, emphasizing practical skills for hazard mitigation and environmental monitoring.
