Dr. Alexander Steele is a Lecturer (teaching) in Earth Sciences at University College London (UCL), specializing in volcano seismology and eruption forecasting. He contributes to and coordinates multiple programs, including the MSc Geophysical Hazards and PG Cert Natural Hazards for Insurers. His research focuses on understanding magmatic systems and forecasting volcanic eruptions by integrating seismo-acoustic data, numerical models, and field observations. He investigates stress field evolution around magma bodies and their impact on volcanic unrest and eruption locations.
Teaching responsibilities include modules such as the Geophysical Hazards Field Course, Research Methods and Skills, and Insurance and Natural Risks. He also coordinates the MSc Independent Research Project and Geological, Geotechnical and Hydrometeorological Hazards courses. His work emphasizes knowledge exchange between scientific communities and stakeholders, particularly in Ecuador through collaborations with the Instituto Geofisico-Escuela Politecnica Nacional.
Research interests extend to natural and anthropogenic hazards, with a focus on volcanic gas emissions (e.g., SO2/BrO ratios), acoustic analysis of eruptions, and hazard mitigation strategies. His studies often involve interdisciplinary approaches to improve eruption forecasting accuracy and risk assessment frameworks.
