Emma Michaud is a Researcher at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) within the Laboratoire des Sciences de l'Environnement Marin (LEMAR) at Université de Brest. She holds a HDR (Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches) and specializes in biogeochemical processes in coastal ecosystems, particularly mangroves and Arctic environments. Her research focuses on benthic biodiversity, bioturbation, and the impacts of global change on sedimentary carbon dynamics. Michaud has conducted postdoctoral research at Stony Brook University (USA) and Université de Bretagne Occidentale (France).
Education: PhD in Oceanography (2006-2009) jointly from ISMER-UQAR (Canada) and AMU-MIO (France). Key roles include Co-Leader of LEMAR's DISCOVERY team (2022-2026), Co-Leader of EUR-ISBLUE's Sustainability theme, and Director of the GDR Mangroves network (2024-2028). She has supervised multiple PhD and postdoctoral researchers, contributing to over 50 peer-reviewed publications.
Research explores how bioturbation modifies carbon burial and biogeochemical fluxes in mangroves, estuaries, and Arctic regions. Methodologies involve field sampling, lab experiments (e.g., microcosms), and advanced imaging (optodes, drones). Recent work addresses oil spill impacts in Guianese mangroves and mangrove microbiota responses to urbanization.
Major projects include mangrove carbon export studies, sediment dynamics in French Guiana, and Arctic benthic process investigations. She co-authored books on mangrove ecosystems and leads international collaborations through networks like Nereis Park.
