Emma L Carter

Dr. Emma L Carter is a Senior Lecturer in Solid Mechanics and Course Leader for the Mechanical Engineering Technology (BEng) Degree Apprenticeship at the Department of Engineering and Mathematics, College of Business, Technology and Engineering. She leads modules including Level 7 Applied Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics and Level 4 Engineering Principles for Apprentices. Her qualifications include MEng&Man(Hons), PhD, Chartered Engineer status, and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. With 5 years in manufacturing (specializing in steel processing and lean manufacturing), she transitioned to academia in 2002, focusing on multi-body dynamics, pedestrian safety, MEMS, counter-terrorism blast modeling, and auxetic materials.

Research interests span automotive safety, blast injury mitigation, finite element modeling, and genetic algorithm optimization. She has supervised a PhD student and multiple MSc/BEng dissertations. Notable awards include Athena SWAN advocacy and a DocFest competition finalist title. Her work includes EPSRC-funded research on auxetic metamaterials' wetting properties and public perception studies on counter-terrorism measures.
