Emma Johnston is a Senior Lecturer in Forensic Biology at De Montfort University, affiliated with the Leicester School of Pharmacy within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. She is an experienced forensic scientist with expertise in DNA profiling, humanitarian forensic action, and the identification of missing migrants.
Education:
- BSc in Biology
- MSc in Forensic Science
- PhD in Chemistry and Criminology (Forensic Science)
Her research focuses on forensic biology, DNA profiling, disaster victim identification, and the forensic identification of missing migrants. She is particularly interested in the application of forensic science in human rights investigations and the public perception of forensic evidence in the criminal justice system. Her work bridges scientific rigor with social impact, especially in marginalized communities.
The recent publications reflect a strong trajectory in humanitarian forensics, international collaboration, and trust in forensic evidence. Her research integrates molecular biology with criminological and ethical dimensions, particularly in post-conflict and migration contexts. She contributes actively to policy and education through international networks.
Scientific Awards:
- Vice Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award (2018)
Professional Affiliations and Grants: She is a member of the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences and the International Society for Forensic Genetics. She serves on the European COST Action CA22106 (Migrant Disaster Identification) and the Justice Rapid Response Expert Roster. Currently, she is a Co-Investigator on an ESRC-funded project titled "Trust in Forensic Science Evidence in the criminal justice system: The experience of marginalised groups" (Grant: £657,922), involving collaboration with six UK universities. This project examines how marginalized populations perceive and interact with forensic evidence.
She teaches courses in Forensic Biology, Bodies Tissues and Fluids, DNA Profiling, and Expert Witness Skills. There is no mention of specific labs or research teams, but her international fieldwork and multidisciplinary projects suggest active engagement in global forensic networks.
