Emma Huddlestone

Emma Huddlestone is a Lecturer in Sociology at the University of East Anglia, where she joined in November 2021. She is a member of the Gender and Its Intersections research group within the Sociology Department in the Faculty of Social Sciences. Her teaching spans multiple modules including The Military, Security and Society; Researching Social Life; and Gender, Victimization and Offending.

Dr Huddlestone's research centers on the intersection of military life and civilian experiences, with particular emphasis on military spouses. Her work employs qualitative methodologies to explore how gendered, militarized constructs shape role expectations and limit support-seeking behaviors among military partners. She examines stigma within welfare provision systems and investigates how civilian partners of military personnel navigate the challenges of deployment periods.

Her recent publications reveal a consistent focus on military spouses' experiences through qualitative lenses. The research demonstrates increasing methodological innovation, moving from traditional interview analysis to creative approaches like animating life history interviews as fictive diaries. Her work consistently connects individual experiences to broader structural issues of militarism, gender norms, and welfare systems.

Dr Huddlestone co-founded and co-organizes the Rethinking Military Spouses: Critical Research Group and is a member of the European Research Group on Military and Society's Military Families working group. Her ESRC-funded Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of York built upon her Lancaster University PhD research, creating a cohesive body of work examining military spouses' experiences through deployment cycles.

Her teaching portfolio demonstrates her commitment to integrating research expertise with pedagogy across multiple sociology domains including social policy, wellbeing, gender studies, and social theory. She has developed specialized modules that connect military sociology with broader sociological concepts, creating unique educational opportunities for students interested in the civilian-military interface.
