Emma Hocking is a Lecturer in the Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences at Northumbria University, affiliated with the Cold and Palaeo Environments Research Group. Her research focuses on reconstructing Holocene environmental changes, particularly relative sea-level fluctuations, using diatom analysis and geochronological methods. She investigates coastal and polar environments, including earthquake/tsunami impacts in Chile, lake dynamics in Finland, and Antarctic glacial histories. Dr. Hocking holds a PhD in Geography (2010), MSc (2006), and BSc (2005), and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). She co-supervises PhD student Leeza Pickering on lake mixing regime modeling.
Current projects include the Shifted Ecological Baselines in the Brazilian Savannah (SEBBS), funded by NERC (2019–2021). Her work spans interdisciplinary collaborations, with recent publications addressing mangrove resilience in Indonesia, Eocene vegetation zones, and Antarctic penguin colony responses to volcanism.
