Professor Emma E Vincent serves as Professor of Molecular Metabolism at Bristol Medical School, University of Bristol, and holds a Research Fellowship at the School of Cellular and Molecular Medicine. Her work bridges molecular metabolism and cancer epidemiology, specifically investigating how type 2 diabetes (T2D) and obesity drive cancer development through metabolic reprogramming.
Her educational background includes a BSc from the University of Nottingham and a PhD from the University of Bristol.
Dr. Vincent's research centers on causal metabolic pathways linking T2D to site-specific cancers, with primary focus on colorectal and pancreatic cancers. She employs Mendelian randomization to isolate causative metabolic traits from T2D's heterogeneous profile, followed by laboratory validation using Stable Isotope Tracer Analysis and extracellular flux analysis to measure tumor cell metabolism. Her mission targets the development of T2D-specific cancer prevention strategies by identifying metabolic drivers of tumorigenesis.
Recent publications reveal strong trends in obesity-cancer causal inference, particularly adiposity distribution effects across 12 cancer types and proteogenomic identification of molecular mediators like GREM1 in colorectal cancer. This work consistently applies genetic epidemiology to deconstruct metabolic contributions to oncogenesis.
She has supervised 9 postgraduate students, including Dr. Emma Hazelwood (PhD on obesity-colorectal cancer relationships), and currently leads the £1.2M project 'The causal role of ketone bodies in obesity-associated disease risk' (2024-2027) as Principal Investigator. Her grant portfolio includes collaborations with international consortia on Mendelian randomization methodologies.
Dr. Vincent operates within the Bristol Population Health Science Institute cancer research cluster, directing a multidisciplinary team that integrates genetic epidemiology with cellular metabolism studies. Her laboratory maintains active partnerships with McGill University (where she previously held postdoctoral positions) and global cancer genomics initiatives.
