Emma Curtin is a registered architect and Senior Lecturer at the School of Architecture, University of Liverpool. She leads design studios across BA, MA, and MArch programmes, with a focus on community engagement, contested spaces, and sustainable practices in the context of political, economic, and environmental crises.
- Key Roles: Senior Lecturer, Design Studio Leader (BA2, BA3), MArch Dissertation Supervisor
- Research Focus: Lives of women architects in the 1920s-30s, sustainable design pedagogy, low-carbon materials, and community-led architectural processes.
- Professional Experience: Practicing architect at Sheppard Robson, 3D Reid, and Triangle Architects, specializing in education, social housing, transport, and heritage re-use projects.
Her work emphasizes architectural practice as a political act, prioritizing re-use, low-carbon materials, and collaborations with community groups. She campaigns for public spaces like the London Road Fire Station and Library Walk, advocating for community ownership in urban development. Publications focus on disrupting conventional creative processes in architecture to align with climate emergency imperatives.
- Awards & Campaigns: Involved in award-winning school projects; chaired Friends of London Road Fire Station (2012–present) and contributed to Steinbeck Studio’s Granby redevelopment initiatives.
Emma’s teaching integrates live clients (community groups, cooperatives) and explores near-future low-carbon economies, challenging business-as-usual approaches. She currently leads efforts to close awarding gaps in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
