Emma Banister is a Professor of Consumption and Society at the University of Manchester, actively serving as Director of Methods@Manchester, a flagship interdisciplinary research initiative under the Faculty of Humanities. Her work bridges consumption studies with gendered work practices, focusing on the work-care interface, flexible working, and parental leave, particularly in SMEs and fatherhood contexts.
Recent research includes examining how digitalisation reshapes work norms, with a 2025 article exploring the "ideal worker" concept. She co-organizes innovative affect theatre workshops (e.g., March 2025) that merge theatre and anthropology methods to advance ethnographic research. Emma also facilitates discussions on ethical challenges like "imposter participants" in qualitative studies (March 2025 seminar).
She contributes to the ESRC Young Women's Working Lives project, analyzing student employment inequalities, and supports initiatives like the Methods Fair (June 2025) to showcase interdisciplinary research advancements.
