Emma Apatu is a Part-Time Associate Professor in the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact at McMaster University's Faculty of Health Sciences. She is a member of the Centre for Health Economics and Policy Analysis (CHEPA) and previously served as Director of McMaster's Master of Public Health Program and Interim Director of the Graduate Diploma in Community and Public Health.
Dr. Apatu's educational background includes:
- DrPH from East Tennessee State University
- MPH from Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health
Her research focuses on public health education, curriculum development, and health policy analysis. She has particular expertise in competency-based learning approaches for public health professionals and has conducted extensive work on core competencies for public health practice in Canada. Her research also spans disaster response and recovery, community health, health equity, and the intersection of transportation infrastructure with public health outcomes.
Dr. Apatu's recent scholarly work shows a strong emphasis on pandemic response and recovery, particularly examining the impacts of COVID-19 on public health systems and workers. Her publications reveal an interdisciplinary approach that connects public health education with practical policy applications across diverse areas including workforce burnout, physical distancing policies in different global contexts, and strategies for transitioning to a "new normal" post-pandemic.
Dr. Apatu has been actively involved in teaching and curriculum development for the Master of Public Health program at McMaster University.
