Emily Zobel Marshall is a Reader in Postcolonial Literature at Leeds Beckett University's School of Cultural Studies. With Martinican and British heritage, she has resided in Leeds for over twenty years. Her academic leadership includes founding the Caribbean Carnival Cultures Research Platform to integrate scholarly and creative approaches to carnival traditions. She holds external roles as Vice Chair of the anti-racism charity David Oluwale Memorial Association and Creative Associate at the youth arts organization Geraldine Connor Foundation.
Her research examines Caribbean literature, African diaspora folklore, and cultural resistance, with emphasis on trickster figures in oral traditions. She has published two major scholarly books and contributed poetry to literary journals. Her interdisciplinary work bridges academic analysis with public engagement through BBC radio appearances, international conferences, and cultural event curation.
Recent publications focus on literary criticism, postcolonial narratives, and diaspora studies, often analyzing contemporary fiction and literary awards. She actively consults institutions on diversity initiatives while teaching courses on African-American and Black British literatures.
