Emily Van Duyn is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She holds a Ph.D. in Communication Studies from the University of Texas at Austin and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University's Program on Democracy and the Internet. Her research focuses on political communication, digital media's role in political discourse, and the effects of polarization on democratic norms.
Van Duyn's educational background includes a Ph.D. (2019) from UT Austin, an M.Ed. from Southern Methodist University, and dual B.S./B.A. degrees in Communication Studies and Government from UT Austin. She has held professional appointments since 2019, including roles at Stanford University and the Center for Media Engagement.
Her research investigates why individuals engage in secret political organizing (e.g., rural Texas progressives) and explores how polarization impacts familial relationships. Key outputs include her award-winning book Democracy Lives in Darkness (Oxford UP, 2021) and over a dozen peer-reviewed articles in journals like Political Communication and Journal of Communication.
