Dr. Emily Tobey is a Professor at the University of Texas at Dallas, specializing in communication disorders with a focus on cochlear implantation and speech production. She previously held the Nelle C. Johnston Chair in Communication Disorders in Children, established to honor Nelle C. Johnston's legacy in aiding children with hearing challenges.

Her research explores longitudinal effects of cochlear implants, brain imaging in auditory rehabilitation, and speech perception in adults who regained hearing after deafness. Dr. Tobey’s work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) since 1975, and she has co-authored over 155 peer-reviewed manuscripts globally. She received the Honors of the Association from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association in 2011 for her groundbreaking studies in oral rehabilitation and academic leadership.
