Emily Stelzer is a Professor of Literature and Associate Dean for Academic Programs in the College of Arts and Humanities at Houston Christian University. She holds a PhD in Literature from the University of Dallas, along with an MA in English from the same institution and a BA in English from Hillsdale College.
Her research interests focus on early modern literature, particularly the works of John Milton, William Shakespeare, and other Renaissance authors. She explores themes such as religious symbolism, the interplay between literature and theology, and the philosophical underpinnings of early modern texts. Her work often bridges literary analysis with religious and political thought, as seen in her monograph Gluttony and Gratitude: Milton’s Philosophy of Eating and her articles on topics like Milton’s civil power theories and Shakespeare’s engagement with biblical narratives.
Dr. Stelzer has published in journals such as Religions, Scholarly Milton, and Early Modern English Studies, as well as book chapters in edited volumes like The Palgrave Handbook of Religion and State. Her recent scholarship emphasizes the intersection of literature, religion, and political theory in early modern contexts.
In her teaching, she offers courses on John Milton, Shakespeare, Menippean satire, and Great Works of Literature. She is also the Program Coordinator for the Great Texts program and serves as a Content Expert for English and Language Arts education.
