Emily Moore

Emily Moore is an Associate Professor of Art History at Colorado State University (CSU) and Associate Curator of North American Art at the Gregory Allicar Museum of Art. Her work focuses on Native American and American art history, with a particular emphasis on Indigenous North American art histories and their global inclusion. She holds a Ph.D. (2012) and M.A. (2007) from the University of California, Berkeley, and an M.F.A. (2004) from West Virginia University.

Moore collaborates with Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian communities to document their art histories and critically examines colonial narratives in art historiography. Her research has been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Terra Foundation, and the Sealaska Heritage Foundation. Her book Proud Raven, Panting Wolf (2018) was nominated for a major award in Indigenous Studies.

Her peer-reviewed publications explore themes such as colonial counter-monuments, Indigenous visual sovereignty, and museum ethics. She also advocates for cultural repatriation and ethical museum practices through works like Propatriation: Possibilities for Art after NAGPRA (2010).

Moore’s academic and curatorial roles intersect to promote Indigenous perspectives in art history, bridging academic research with public engagement through museum exhibitions and community partnerships.
