Dr. Emily McTernan is an Associate Professor in Political Theory at the Department of Political Science/School of Public Policy at University College London (UCL). She co-hosts UCL’s podcast UCL Uncovering Politics and serves as Area Editor at Ergo and Associate Editor of Politics, Philosophy, & Economics. Her work explores the ethics and politics of social interactions, focusing on social norms, emotions like offense, equality, and justice. She has held visiting positions at ANU and ICREA/Pompeu Fabra University.
Her research investigates topics such as microaggressions, freedom of association, heckling, humor ethics, and egalitarianism. Notable publications include her monograph On Taking Offence (OUP, 2023) and articles in Philosophy & Public Affairs, Journal of Political Philosophy, and Mind. McTernan has supervised four PhD students to completion, all now in academic careers, and led UCL’s MA in Legal and Political Theory for six years.
Her current projects address the value of association in public spaces and the role of social norms in perpetuating inequality. She advocates for recognizing offense as a socially constructive emotion resisting hierarchies. McTernan’s work has been supported by the Leverhulme Trust, Templeton Trust, and British Academy. She teaches courses on political philosophy, ethics, and the philosophy of science.
Awards include the 2021 Early Career Prize from the Britain and Ireland Association for Political Thought. Her podcast appearances and public talks, such as on New Books Network and Why? Radio, highlight her engagement with broader audiences on topics like offense, free speech, and social justice.
