Emily M Nagel is an Assistant Professor in the Neonatology (Pediatrics) department at the University of Minnesota. As a NICHD K99/R00 scholar, she focuses on early life exposures and later health outcomes, particularly for preterm infants. Her research combines clinical research, epidemiology, and omics-based techniques to study interactions between maternal stress, nutrition, and their effects on growth and neurodevelopment.
Her work contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals in health equity for neonatal populations. She operates in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit environment, examining human milk composition, body composition analysis, and growth factors like IGF-1 in preterm infants.
Recent publications show trends in pediatric nutrition, neonatal growth factors, and milk metabolomics. Her studies employ bioelectrical impedance, ultrasound techniques, and clinical trial frameworks to improve feeding outcomes.
Scientific recognition includes the NICHD K99/R00 fellowship. She has secured NIH grants (2022-2024, 2024-2027) and Gerber Foundation funding (2018-2021) for bedside ultrasound and feeding success projects.
As a pediatric registered dietitian, her work bridges clinical nutrition with translational research, aiming to reduce chronic illness risks in preterm infants through evidence-based neonatal feeding protocols and maternal stress interventions.
