Emily Howells is a Research Fellow at New York University Abu Dhabi, following her PhD in Marine Biology from James Cook University and the Australian Institute of Marine Science. Her research focuses on coral thermal tolerance, symbiont dynamics, and climate resilience. She previously contributed to projects on coral population genomics, disease monitoring, and symbiont strain selection.
Education: BSc & PhD in Marine Biology (James Cook University/AIMS). Her work examines how coral-algal symbionts adapt to thermal stress, revealing limited acclimatization potential beyond current environmental regimes. Current research in UAE aims to identify heat-tolerant traits in Middle Eastern corals for global climate adaptation strategies.
Key affiliations include the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies (2005–2022) and collaborations with institutions such as NYUAD. She has engaged in interdisciplinary studies on coral reef resilience and participated in major reef monitoring initiatives.
