Emily Eden

Dr Emily Eden is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Ophthalmology, University College London. Her research focuses on membrane contact sites and cholesterol transport mechanisms, particularly in the context of lysosomal storage diseases like Niemann-Pick type-C (NPC) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Eden's work investigates how cholesterol derived from lysosomes is transported to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) through transient membrane contact sites between these organelles. She aims to identify regulatory proteins at these sites and explore their therapeutic potential for mobilizing lipids in diseases characterized by lysosomal storage defects.

Her publications since 2016 highlight advancements in understanding organelle communication, lipid trafficking, and their implications in neurodegenerative and ocular diseases. Key themes include ER-endosome/lysosome contact dynamics, sphingolipid signaling, and cellular stress responses.
