Emily Downes is a Senior Student Success Tutor (Academic Writing) at Teesside University (TU), part of the Student Learning & Academic Resources (SLAR) team. She holds an MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of Essex (2021), focusing on language and social justice in higher education contexts. Her work emphasizes equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), reflected in her roles as an EDI Champion for Women's Street Watch Middlesbrough and a member of TU's LGBTQ+ Focus Group.
Professionally, she has experience as a lecturer in English Composition and managed a Writing Resource Laboratory. She volunteered for Cara Syria as an EAP tutor and contributes to BALEAP's Academic Literacies Special Interest Group as Social Media Coordinator. Her research and advocacy address barriers to academic success for marginalized groups, integrating social justice principles into educational practices.
