Emily Doucet is a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Art History and Communication Studies at McGill University (2022-2023), collaborating with Professor Jonathan Sterne. She holds a PhD from the University of Toronto (2020). Her research explores the interplay of photographic formats, corporate entities, and state/military postal systems in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with a focus on narratives around Félix Nadar’s photographic innovations. She is preparing a book manuscript based on her doctoral work. Her research has been supported by prestigious institutions including the Northrop Frye Centre, Eccles Centre for American Studies, and the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art.
She contributes to both academic and general audiences through writing for journals like Grey Room, Lady Science, and Public Parking, as well as publications such as Border Crossings and Canadian Art. Recent work includes an article in Transbordeur: photographie, histoire, société analyzing the military and colonial dimensions of microfilm technology. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges technological history, visual culture, and colonial studies, emphasizing the mobility and political dimensions of photographic communication.
Funding and affiliations include grants from the Kulturwissenschaftliches Institut Essen and The Image Centre. Her scholarship highlights intersections between technological innovation, historical context, and socio-political power structures.
