Emily Detrick serves as Director of Horticulture at Cornell Botanic Gardens and holds a Lecturer position in the School of Integrative Plant Science within Cornell University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. She oversees the curation and care of the Botanic Gardens' living plant collections comprising over 4,500 taxa of hardy trees, shrubs, and perennials.
Education:
- Master's degree in Horticulture from Cornell University (Public Garden Leadership focus)
- Bachelor of Fine Art from Murray State University
Her research interests center on plant conservation efforts for globally rare, vulnerable, or endangered species, sustainable campus landscape development, and the synthesis of art with horticultural science. She actively develops ex situ conservation programs and maintains Nationally Accredited Oak and Maple Collections as an affiliate member of the Global Conservation Consortium for Oaks (GCCO).
As an educator, she teaches PLHRT 2010: The Art of Horticulture, an experiential course exploring creativity within the natural world. Her work bridges practical horticulture with artistic expression through the Botanic Gardens' living laboratory that serves researchers, students, and the public.
Professional background includes previous roles as Alpine Horticulturist at Stonecrop Gardens and manager of an organic vegetable CSA farm in New Mexico. Prior to her horticulture career, she worked as a practicing artist and with arts organizations including the Speed Art Museum and Scottsdale Public Art.
