Emily Carson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at McGill University. Her research focuses on early modern philosophy, particularly the intersection of philosophy, mathematics, and science in the 17th and 18th centuries, with a central emphasis on Kant’s philosophy of mathematics. She holds editorial roles including Executive Editor of the Canadian Journal of Philosophy.
Carson earned an MA in Philosophy from McGill University and a PhD in Philosophy from Harvard University. Her academic career has been dedicated to exploring foundational questions in Kantian epistemology, Leibnizian critiques of Locke, and the historical development of mathematical concepts within philosophical frameworks.
Her research interests span Kant’s synthetic a priori, transcendental idealism, and the methodology of mathematics in early modern thought. She has also addressed comparative studies between Locke and Kant on mathematical knowledge, as well as the metaphysical underpinnings of early modern science.
Carson’s publications consistently engage with the interplay between philosophical systems and their mathematical foundations, offering critical analyses of historical texts and their relevance to contemporary debates in philosophy of science and epistemology.
