Emily Bills is a Participating Adjunct Professor and Chair of the Construction Management and Sustainable Practices program at Woodbury University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She also coordinates the Urban Studies Program. Her research focuses on urban history, social and environmental justice, and the intersection of telecommunications infrastructure with urban development. She holds a Ph.D. in the history of architecture and urbanism from New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Smithsonian Institution Archives of American Art.
Her distinguished career includes curating exhibitions on notable figures like Catherine Opie and Richard Barnes, as well as authoring award-winning books such as California Captured (2018) and Wayne Thom: Photographing the Late Modern (2020). Her upcoming project, Telephone City, explores Los Angeles’ growth through telecommunications networks. She has received grants and fellowships from organizations including the American Council of Learned Societies and the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation.
Her articles and books span architectural photography, gendered material practices, and urban development trends. Bills actively bridges academic research with public engagement through exhibitions and publications that highlight overlooked histories of urban spaces and infrastructure.
