Emily Bernate

Emily Bernate is an Assistant Professor of Spanish in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at St. Edward's University, located within the School of Arts and Humanities. She holds a Master's degree and completed Ph.D. coursework at the University of Houston. Her research focuses on sociolinguistics and pragmatics, particularly gender differences in language use and politeness norms in US Spanish contexts. She also studies Spanish Heritage Learners and the role of Spanish in the United States. Currently, she teaches Spanish linguistics courses with a focus on heritage learners.
