Emily B. Askew is a Teaching Associate Professor in the Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology at East Carolina University's Brody School of Medicine. She directs multiple anatomy courses across medical, physician assistant, physical therapy, and nurse anesthesia programs while serving as Assistant Director for the Summer Program for Future Doctors.
Her educational background includes:
- B.S. from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
- Ph.D. from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
- Postdoctoral Fellowship at Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University
Dr. Askew's research evolved from molecular studies of CD44-hyaluronan signaling in osteoarthritis (2007-2017) to current focus on medical education innovation. Her anatomical sciences education work develops learning tools to enhance retention in medical curricula, building on her extensive teaching experience across multiple health professions.
Her 12 publications (2007-2019) demonstrate expertise in both cell biology and educational scholarship. Early work appeared in biochemical journals examining chondrocyte signaling, while recent publications address medical education methodologies. This transition reflects her specialization in anatomy pedagogy while maintaining scientific rigor.
Dr. Askew actively mentors students through research rotations for doctoral candidates and directs educational programs for medical students. Her coordination of the Research Problems in Cell Biology course and Summer Program for Future Doctors demonstrates commitment to developing future physicians through structured educational pathways.
