Emilia Nielsen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Science at York University's Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, where she leads the Health & Society program. Her interdisciplinary research examines illness narratives through the lenses of medical humanities, critical disability studies, and feminist cultural studies.
Her research explores:
- Breast cancer counter-narratives and narrative repair
- Queer and crip approaches to illness representation
- Poetics of chronic illness and disability
- Creative writing as health intervention
- Medical standardization and patient resistance
Nielsen's scholarly work combines critical analysis with creative practice, including award-winning poetry collections that explore embodiment, chronic illness, and queer identity. Her book Disrupting Breast Cancer Narratives won the Elli Köngäs-Maranda Prize from the American Folklore Society.
She has supervised graduate students researching media representations of state violence, disability justice in performance, and filmic representations of disability. Currently on sabbatical (2024-2025), Nielsen serves as a York-Massey Fellow at Massey College.
