Emil Verner is Associate Professor of Finance at MIT Sloan School of Management. His research examines financial crises through historical analysis of banking stability, credit markets, and debt dynamics. Verner's influential work demonstrates how solvency fundamentals—not liquidity runs—drive bank failures.
His 2024 Failing Banks study analyzed 38,000 banks over 150 years, establishing three universal markers of bank failure: 1) Gradual solvency erosion, 2) Rising non-core funding dependence, and 3) Pre-crisis rapid growth. Verner's cross-country research shows that credit booms financing non-tradable sectors consistently precede severe downturns.
Honors include the 2025 Sloan Research Fellowship and Ieke van den Burg Prize. Verner advises central banks on crisis prevention and has testified on regulatory implications of his research.
