Emiel Hensen is a Full Professor at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry, specializing in Inorganic Materials & Catalysis. With a PhD in molecular heterogeneous catalysis from TU/e (2000), he has pioneered innovations in catalyst design for sustainable energy and chemical production.
His research focuses on fundamental catalytic mechanisms using operando characterization techniques (XPS, XAS, vibrational spectroscopy), theoretical modeling (DFT, microkinetics), and performance testing. Key applications include methane activation, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, lignin upgrading, and renewable feedstock conversion (e.g., sugars, biomass). He has advanced hierarchical zeolites and metal-support cooperativity in selective oxidation.
