Emery N. Brown

Emery N. Brown holds dual professorships as the Edward Hood Taplin Professor of Medical Engineering and Computational Neuroscience at MIT and the Warren M. Zapol Professor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School. He is also an anesthesiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). His academic journey includes a bachelor’s in applied mathematics from Harvard College, master’s and Ph.D. in statistics from Harvard University, and an M.D. from Harvard Medical School.

His research focuses on the neuroscience of general anesthesia, statistical methodologies for neuroscience data, and neurophysiological signatures of anesthetics. He pioneered signal processing techniques for circadian rhythm analysis and hippocampal spatial representation studies. Brown is a fellow of IEEE, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the National Academies of Medicine, Sciences, and Engineering, as well as the American Philosophical Society.

His accolades include the NIH Pioneer Award, Guggenheim Fellowship, and Gruber Prize in Neuroscience. Brown has been honored with honorary Doctor of Science degrees from USC and SUNY Downstate. His work bridges anesthesia, statistics, and neuroscience, with impactful contributions to both clinical practice and theoretical research.
