Dr. Emel Akçalı is a Senior Lecturer in International Relations at the Defence Studies Department, King's College London, affiliated with the School of Security Studies within the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy. Her research focuses on environmental geopolitics, critical security studies, and non-Western international relations frameworks, with a particular emphasis on the Middle East, North Africa, and the Mediterranean region. She has been funded by institutions including the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) and the British Institute in Ankara, and has held prestigious fellowships at CEU and Aix-Marseille University.
Her work critically examines the intersections of climate change, energy transitions, and geopolitical dynamics, particularly in contested regions like the Eastern Mediterranean. She has authored multiple peer-reviewed articles and a forthcoming book on Turkey’s environmental geopolitics. Her teaching and research explore themes such as green energy transitions, conflict-driven migration, and the socio-political impacts of climate policies.
Key awards include resident fellowships at CEU (2013) and Aix-Marseille (2016). She actively contributes to research groups like the Environmental Security and Contemporary Marxism Research Groups at King's, addressing topics such as climate justice, resource conflicts, and transnational political movements.
