Emanuelle Santos is a Senior Lecturer in Modern Languages at the University of Birmingham, where she coordinates the Portuguese Studies programme and the Instituto Camões’ Cátedra Gil Vicente. She holds a PhD from the University of Warwick (2016), an MA from the University of São Paulo (2010), and a BA from the same institution (2009). Her research interrogates postcoloniality, world literature theories, and cultural dynamics in Portuguese-speaking nations, with a focus on race, gender, and decolonial critique.
Dr. Santos teaches language, literature, and critical theory at both undergraduate and MA levels, offering modules such as 'World Literature and Film II' and 'Representations of Love, Desire and Sexuality in the Lusophone World'. Her work critiques Eurocentric epistemologies and advocates for epistemological diversity in understanding peripheral cultures.
Her recent research explores postcolonial theory’s applicability to Portuguese-speaking Africa and the circulation of world literature from semi-peripheral contexts. She has organized international conferences like 'Peripheral Postcolonialities' (2017) and contributed to special journal issues on Atlantic cultural crossings and postcolonial memory.
Currently serving as Vice Chair of the Early-Career Researcher Development Committee at the International Comparative Literature Association (ICLA), Santos bridges academic leadership with rigorous scholarly output. Her teaching and research emphasize transnational perspectives and critical engagement with colonial legacies.
