Else Marie Knudsen is an Assistant Professor at Trent University’s Department of Social Work, based at the Peterborough Campus. Her academic background includes a PhD in Social Policy from the London School of Economics (2017), alongside a Master of Social Work (2002) and Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Linguistics (2000) from the University of Toronto. Her research focuses on criminal justice policy, penology, and the societal impacts of mass incarceration, particularly the experiences of children of prisoners. She advocates for centering marginalized voices in policy reform and has published widely on systemic invisibility of incarcerated families in legal frameworks.
Teaching interests include critical social work practices, reflexivity in professional practice, and politicizing social policy decisions. Her work integrates decolonizing methodologies and structural critique. Key contributions include studies on familial incarceration’s effects on children, prison visitation policies, and submissions to UN human rights committees.
Knudsen has presented globally at conferences such as the American Society of Criminology Annual Meeting and Oxford University’s Prisoners’ Families Symposium. Her research highlights intersections between criminal justice systems, child welfare, and social policy gaps.
