Chantal Fahmy, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), affiliated with the College for Health, Community and Policy (HCAP). She holds a Ph.D. from Arizona State University and specializes in health criminology, prison reentry, incarceration's public health impacts, and social support systems within corrections. Her research bridges criminal justice and public health, focusing on marginalized populations' wellbeing post-incarceration.
Dr. Fahmy's work addresses systemic inequities through studies on dental care disparities for older adults with incarceration histories, mental health consequences of traumatic brain injuries during imprisonment, and racial dynamics in prison social structures. She received the 2022 Division on Corrections and Sentencing Distinguished New Scholar Award from the American Society of Criminology.
Her grants include projects on traumatic brain injury health outcomes ($15K, 2022-2023), older adults with incarcerated family members ($14.96K, 2020-2021), and child sex trafficking stakeholder platforms ($236K, 2019-2021). Key publications analyze ACA's impact on formerly incarcerated individuals' oral health, TBI's post-release mental health effects, and racialized prison social codes.
Her presentations span venues like the American Society of Criminology and Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, addressing topics from gang member reentry tracking to coping mechanisms during incarceration. Fahmy advocates for policy reforms to improve health access and social support for justice-involved populations.
