Elsa Mari Almås is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Agder, affiliated with the Faculty of Health and Sport Sciences. She holds a Cand. Psychol. from the University of Bergen (1981) and is a Specialist in Clinical Psychology (1988) and Clinical Sexology (2002). Her career includes private practice since 1988 and academic roles as Associate Professor (2001–2012) and Full Professor in Sexology (2012–present). She co-founded the sexology education programs at the University of Agder with Esben Esther Pirelli Benestad.
Her research focuses on clinical sexology, gender incongruence, and trauma rehabilitation. Notable contributions include developing Nordic curricula in sexology and co-authoring key textbooks on gender and sexuality. She actively collaborates with international organizations like NACS and contributes to policy discussions on transgender healthcare and sexual health rights.
Her publications analyze gender identity pathways, sexual trauma treatment, and the role of sexological organizations. She leads the ReSex research group and advocates for evidence-based practices in sexual health. Her work bridges clinical practice, policy, and interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing complex gender and sexual health challenges.
