Elod Kovacs

Elod Kovacs is a Senior Lecturer at Károli Gáspár Reformed University's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Institute of Social and Communication Sciences. His academic career spans multiple Hungarian institutions including the University of Debrecen and University of Szeged.

Dr. Kovacs earned his PhD in Folklore from the University of Debrecen in 2001 with a dissertation titled 'Marked epic worldview elements from the Carpathian Basin to the Caucasus.' He previously obtained MA degrees in Iranian Language and Literature (1999) and Turkish philology (1995) from Eötvös Loránd University. His educational background also includes Russian language studies completed in 1990.

His research focuses on the parallels between Turkish, Iranian, East Slavic, and Hungarian folk literature, with particular emphasis on comparative folk poetry across Eurasia. Dr. Kovacs has made significant contributions to understanding the linguistic and cultural connections between Hungarian folklore and its Eurasian counterparts, especially in Turkic and Iranian traditions. His work bridges linguistic analysis with ethnographic insights, creating a multidisciplinary approach to folklore studies.

Dr. Kovacs's scholarly output demonstrates consistent focus on Eurasian folk traditions, with particular attention to ballad structures, narrative patterns, and linguistic elements that reveal historical connections across cultures. His publications span monographs, book chapters, journal articles, and conference proceedings, showing remarkable breadth across both historical and contemporary folk traditions.

Dr. Kovacs has supervised doctoral research, including Lee Sang Dong's 2007 dissertation on 'Parallels in genre among Hungarian ballads and Korean narrative folk songs.' He has also participated in numerous international conferences focused on folklore, Turkic studies, and Eurasian cultural connections, including the Permanent International Altaistic Conference and International Ballad Commission meetings. His academic service includes participation in research projects such as the 'Old Turkic Loanwords in Hungarian' program (2001-2003).

With exceptional language skills including advanced Turkish, Russian, and Middle/Classical Persian (translation level), Dr. Kovacs is uniquely positioned to conduct comparative research across Eurasian folk traditions. His scholarly contributions have helped illuminate the complex cultural connections between Hungarian folklore and its broader Eurasian context.
