Dr. Kagan Arik is an Instructional Professor and Ayaslı Lecturer in Modern Turkish and Turkic languages at the University of Chicago, where he coordinates the Turkish language program. With 25 years of teaching experience, he has developed curriculum for all proficiency levels and conducts research on Central Asian anthropology and linguistics.
His courses include Elementary through Advanced Turkish, Uzbek, Kazakh, and specialized seminars on Central Asian musical folklore and shamanic traditions. Dr. Arik researches pre-Islamic cultural elements in Turkic societies and traditional healing practices across Central Asia.
He founded the Central Asian Studies Society at UChicago and serves on the Central Eurasian Studies Committee. Fieldwork has included ethnographic research in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tatarstan, and Xinjiang.
