Elmer-Rico Mojica is a Professor of Analytical Chemistry at Pace University's Dyson College of Arts and Sciences, where he also serves as Associate Director of the Forensic Science Program and Director of the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP). He is based in the Department of Chemistry/Physical Sciences at the NYC campus and leads an active undergraduate research group.
Education:
- Postdoc in Biophysics, CUNY, New York City, 2011
- PhD in Chemistry, University at Buffalo, 2010
- MS in Agricultural Chemistry, University of the Philippines Los Baños, 2003
- BS in Agricultural Chemistry, University of the Philippines Los Baños, 1998
His research focuses on applying spectroscopic, chromatographic, and electroanalytical methods to environmental, food, and forensic science problems. He is particularly interested in nanoparticle-based removal of heavy metals and development of chemical sensors. His educational philosophy emphasizes engagement through "Chemtertainment," integrating pop culture into chemistry instruction.
The available publications reflect a dual focus on analytical chemistry research and innovative STEM education, especially during the pandemic. His work spans instrumental analysis of organic compounds and pedagogical strategies for underrepresented students in STEM.
Scientific Awards:
- Pace University, 2023, Kenan Award for Teaching Excellence
- Pace University, 2021, Homer and Charles Pace Faculty Award
Dr. Mojica has secured multiple grants from the NSF, Verizon Thinkfinity Foundation, and internal university sources to support instrumentation and undergraduate research. He mentors undergraduate students who regularly present at conferences and co-author publications. He is also actively involved in professional service as a reviewer for journals such as Journal of Hazardous Materials, Sensors & Actuators B: Chemical, and Applied Spectroscopy. Internationally, he mentors junior scientists through Team MOJO and promotes chemistry education via Project CHEMUNITY. Starting in 2025, he will serve as a Visiting Professor at the School of Environmental Science and Management, University of the Philippines Los Baños.
He is a member of the American Chemical Society, Society of Applied Spectroscopy, and Council on Undergraduate Research, and serves on various university committees related to student affairs and campus operations.
