Elmar Josef Prenner is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Calgary's Faculty of Science. He holds a Ph.D. in Membrane Biophysics from the Austrian Academy of Sciences (1995) and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Alberta, specializing in biophysical chemistry. His research integrates biochemistry, biophysics, and nanotechnology.
Primary research areas include biomembrane architecture (lipid rafts/domains), lipid-protein interactions, nanoparticle-based pulmonary drug delivery, and bioinorganic chemistry. He employs advanced techniques like Brewster angle microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry to study membrane dynamics. A key focus is developing lung surfactant models to assess nanoparticle interactions and vaping additives.
Dr. Prenner co-founded Alberta BioPhotonics (2014) to commercialize instruments for water quality analysis and healthcare. His awards include the AHFMR Scholarship (2002) and the Petroleum Tech Alliance's 'most innovative water-related technology' prize (2006).
