Elly Hol is a Full Professor of "Glia biology of brain diseases" at Utrecht University and Vice-Dean of Research at the University Medical Center Utrecht. She is the head of the Department of Translational Neuroscience within the Utrecht Brain Center. Hol is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and Academia Europaea, with a career spanning over two decades in molecular neurobiology research.
- PhD in Molecular Neurobiology from Utrecht University
- Max-Planck Fellowship during early career
Her research focuses on glial cells' role in neurological and psychiatric diseases, including dementia, stroke, brain tumors, and neuropsychiatric disorders. She employs translational approaches across human post-mortem tissue, human cell models, and mouse models to identify glia-targeted therapies.
Recent publications emphasize neuroglia pathophysiology in leukodystrophies, vascularized brain organoid models, and emerging in vitro systems for microglia research. These works span neuroscience, neurology, and biotechnology domains, with specific interests in glial dysfunction mechanisms and therapeutic innovation.

- NWO Gravitation Grant 2019
- Member of Academia Europaea 2019
- NWO VICI Grant 2009
- Hersenstichting Fellowship 2000
- Max-Planck Fellowship 1995
Hol serves on the editorial board of Wiley's Glia journal and contributes to policy discussions as a board member of KNAW. Her work bridges fundamental molecular neuroscience with clinical applications through integrated translational studies.
